Hawaii Travel: Maui Shows

Maui shows have earned a worldwide reputation for being some of the warmest and most joyful Polynesian ceremonies anywhere in the hemisphere. If you have never seen an authentic luau, you may not appreciate just how much time, heart and ability goes into making such a festival shine. See a good one, however, and it is unlikely you will ever look at Hawaiian culture the same way again.

What sets Hawaiian celebrations apart from the shows you may have seen on the mainland is their participatory nature. Instead of just sitting and taking in the sights and sounds of some performers, you are encouraged to join the revelry, lift a glass and learn some traditional music. Add in the delicious food and frothy cocktails, and its no wonder these uproarious celebrations have been a way of life for so many years.

The Big Show
Hawaiian culture is in many ways an expression of joy. The spirit of aloha, described by one scholar as gaiety, joy, happiness and abundance, encapsulates much of what this island culture has cherished for so long. To experience it alongside fellow travelers and native sons is an experience quite unlike taking in the latest Broadway musical, and most tourists come away with the memories to prove it.

Its not always easy to find where the heart of any culture lies. Shows on Maui that are tailored to the Polynesian way are widely regarded as some of the most beautiful examples of traditional culture. If you want to see more than just sunlight and volcanoes, you may be grateful you made the time to catch a true Hawaiian show.
